Agora Roman Bath
Aristeides, a famous 2nd Century orator and writer, once stated that Smyrna was home to many baths, and that it was too difficult to decide upon which one to bathe in, because they were all so beautiful.
Agora’s own Roman bath was (also) built in the 2nd Century and was thought to be one of the district’s most frequented baths due to its close proximity to the Agora and the harbour. Excavation work on it has exposed a frigidarium, calidarium, and tepidarium (cold, hot and warm sections), alongside two massive arches that still stand at 14 metres tall, and which were originally part of the central load-bearing system. Until recently, a cinema and other buildings sat over it.
